Serious bullying reference withdrawn

The Attorney-General, Robert Clark, has officially withdrawn the serious bullying reference from the Commission.

The withdrawal follows the introduction of legislation in State Parliament to make clear that serious bullying is a crime carrying a penalty of up to 10 years in jail.

The Commission was asked to review the adequacy of Victoria's criminal laws in dealing with serious bullying by the previous government in late 2010. On 5 April 2011, the Attorney-General introduced the Crimes Amendment (Bullying) Bill 2011, which amends the existing offence of stalking to make clear that the offence covers serious bullying.
