Law Reform Process
The commission receives a reference from the Attorney-General or
begins a community law reform project

The commission's staff undertake initial research and consultation

A Consultation Paper is published which explains the key issues
and provides a basis for consultation

Submissions are invited from any interested individuals or groups

Consultations are undertaken with members of the community, people working in
the area and other relevant agencies

A report is published with recommendations for changes to the law
![]()
The Attorney-General tables the report in parliament
![]()
Parliament decides whether to implement the recommendations
(in whole or in part) through legislation
The commission may also publish position/options papers or interim reports and will sometime publish background papers on a particular issue in a project.
