What is Community Law Reform?

Through the community law reform program, the commission can recommend minor changes to the law directly to the Attorney-General.

Anyone can make a suggestion for a Community Law Reform project: individuals, community groups and lawyers. 

Our aim is to improve community involvement in law reform by opening up access to people and communities who are not usually involved in the law but may have good ideas about how to improve the law. 

Community Law Reform projects must involve relatively minor changes to the law and be of general benefit to the community. More information about the criteria used to assess suggestions can be found in the ‘Criteria for Projects’ area of this website.

The commission cannot take on every law reform idea suggested to us. Generally we can only complete two projects a year. If the project is too complex or costly the commission can alert the Attorney-General that it is an area in need of reform.
