People with Intellectual Disabilities at Risk: Discussion Paper

The People with Intellectual Disabilities at Risk: A Legal Framework for Compulsory Care: Discussion Paper was released in May 2002 and received 29 submissions. 

The paper considers the current law, how the criminal justice and human services systems treat people with intellectual disabilities and cognitive impairments and problems with the process. It highlights seven issues: who should be covered; what is risk; treatment; facilities; authorising compulsory care; approval of carers and how the criminal justice and human services systems interact.

An Easy English version of the paper was published for people affected by the recommendations.
