Victorian Law Reform Commission visits Hume region

17 February 2004

The Victorian Law Reform Commission will be in the Hume Region from 25 to 27 February 2004 to seek views on the operation of the Crimes (Family Violence) Act 1987 (the Act).  The commission will visit Shepparton, Benalla and Wangaratta to hear the issues and problems which impact on the effectiveness of the intervention order regime.

“Our laws are failing to protect women and children from family violence,” says commissioner Judith Peirce, who is undertaking the review. “Women and children in rural and regional areas face particular issues when seeking protection. The Law Reform Commission needs to hear from local people affected by the intervention order system because your views will shape our response.”

In conducting the review of the Act, the commission is consulting widely to gather information which will form the basis for recommendations on reforms of the Act.  The Commission will publish a Consultation Paper in July 2004 and will make recommendations to the Attorney-General in a Final Report by July 2005.

The Commission will be meeting with those who are involved in providing support to victims of family violence and groups or individuals with specific needs who are not always adequately provided for by the legal system.

The commission will be meeting with a range of organisations including:

  • Magistrates’ Court Shepparton
  • Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service
  • Goulburn Valley Community Health Service
  • Department of Human Services.
