Victorian Law Reform Commission visits Mildura

5 June 2002

The Victorian Law Reform Commission will be in Mildura from 5 to 7 June 2002 to seek community views on the operation of sex offence laws in Victoria. In particular, the Commission is interested in how the criminal justice system can be more responsive to the needs of complainants in sexual assault cases. The Commission intends to gather information which will form the basis for recommendations on reform of sexual offences law and procedure.

The Commission will be hosting a Sexual Offences Forum for the public on Wednesday, 5 June, 7.30pm at the Alfred Deakin Centre, Benetook Room, 180-190 Deakin Avenue, Mildura.

The Commission will also be meeting with those who are involved in providing support to victims/survivors or sexual assault and groups or individuals with specific needs who are not always adequately provided for by the legal system.

The Commission will be meeting with a range of organisations including:

  • Holy Trinity Lutheran School
  • Irymple Secondary College
  • Magistrates Court
  • Mallee Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Services (CASA)
  • Mildura Base Hospital

"The Commission has a charter to facilitate community-wide consultation and debate on areas of law in need of reform and aims to take an inclusive and innovative approach. Because people do not always feel able to make written submissions or present evidence formally, the Commission will meet with individuals and groups to enable them to express their views in ways that suit them." Marcia Neave said.
